Abstract

Operational aspects of a barrage in extreme climatic conditions Y.H Lim* & J.J. Sharif ^ Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Malaysia Currently on study leave at Memorial University. Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada Abstract A barrage with five movable gates and a ship lock was built across Sungai Sarawak, the major river that passes through the city of Kuching in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. There are operational problems mainly caused by the extreme climatic conditions that prevail within and around the river catchment. Annual rainfall within the catchment is typically around 4000mm while the maximum tidal range downstream of the barrage is around 6m. This paper will describe the conditions that occurred during a flood in January 2000. It illustrates the problems caused when a tide period with highest astronomical tide level coincided with a 5-year return period rainstorm. Besides flooding, there are additional probl
