Abstract
Guidelines for spatial distribution of ecotopes, based on ecological networks and geomorphological boundary conditions S.A.M. van Rooij', W.M. Liefveld*, GJ. Maas' Alterra, Green World Research, The Netherlands Institute for Inland Water Management and Waste Water Treatment (RIZA), The Netherlands Abstract General guidelines for optimisation of the physical distribution of ecotopes have been defined on the basis of the principles of ecological networks and geomorphological boundary conditions. By taking account of the presence or development of functional ecological networks in an area, the physical distribution of ecotopes can be tailored to spatial ecological requirements. In addition to ecological conditions, the abiotic conditions for the development of ecotopes are an important factor here. Planners can apply the guidelines formulated here when planning regional visions or landscape plans in the river district. Presented is a case history of the application of this con
