Abstract
The effect of effluents from fish hatcheries on slightly disturbed rivers - a case study A Gross Department of Environmental Hydrology and Microbiology, Blaustein Institute for Desert Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel Abstract Wayatinah and Florentine hatcheries (owned by Salmon Enterprise of Tasmania Pty Ltd - SALTAS) produce brood stock of Atlantic salmon (Salmo Salar) smolts. A study was undertaken between January and May 2000 on the effluents of these two hatcheries to evaluate their potential environmental harm. Samples were taken every two weeks of the effluent, the receiving waters upstream, and downstream of the farm - these were tested for nutrients and other critical environmental parameters. Additional samples were collected from these sites once per month after the fish-holding tanks had been flushed for cleaning purposes. Effluent quality from the two facilities was reasonably good and the levels of the measured parameters generally met the curren
