Abstract
It has been worldwide recognised that there is a gap in the seismic history of south-eastern Sicily, which was struck by the strong 1169 and 1693 earthquakes. In spite of this in the seismic hazard map of Italy this area is reported as an area with moderate seismic hazard. In the paper it is underlined that because of the seismic gap, in the near future the south-eastern Sicily must be considered with very high risk. The seismic risk is also increased by site effects amplification according to seismic geotechnical hazard concepts. 1 Introduction In the past south-eastern Sicily (South Italy) was shaken by strong earthquakes such as the 1169 earthquake, having XI MCS intensity and the 1693 earthquake, having X MCS intensity. These earthquakes never occurred after 1693 up to now, so a considerable gap in the seismic histo
