Abstract
This paper describes a new objective methodology for modeling building vulnerability. The methodology called Advanced Component Method (ACM™) is a major attempt to replace the conventional loss estimation procedures, which are based on subjective measures and the opinions of experts, with one that objectively measures both earthquake intensity and the physical and monetary damage to buildings. First, response of typical buildings (for example, mid-rise steel moment resisting frame or low-rise concrete frame with shear wall) is obtained analytically by nonlinear seismic, (pushover), analysis. Spectral displacement is used as a measure of earthquake intensity. Damage functions for each building component, both structural and non-str
