Abstract
In Spain the absence of rainfall together with the appearance of long periods of drought represent one of the main environmental problems which have a negative effect on agriculture and which give rise to large forest fires. Remote sensing techniques provide an extremely useful tool for the observation and monitoring of large areas of land, on a scale which is most adequate for a country such as Spain. AVHRR images from the NOAA satellites are especially suitable due to the large area of coverage of the sensor as well as the excellent temporal resolution as daily images are available.
