Abstract
During the last two decades the fast developments in the fields of data acquisition, monitoring and operational modelling led to new technological approaches, which extended and improved the capabilities of the recent generation of operational systems. Some ten years ago mainframe computers were needed to run even simple mathematical models. Nowadays, huge mathematical models can be operated on desktop PCs. Forecast models for coastal waters can provide assistance in developing management concepts, compatible with sustainable development and with the preservation of ecosystems integrity. These models must be complemented by continuous monitoring systems su
