Abstract

Aquifer management is today, given the increasingly important role played by groundwater in meeting the different kinds of water consumption needs, a fundamental component of policies aimed at the promotion of sustainable development. The traditional approach used to establish optimum aquifer management decisions only applies when a single, public or private, entity exerts full control over the aquifer. This paper presents a non-linear optimization model for aquifer management in a competitive environment. The model represents the decision problem faced by a public agency that controls the utilization of groundwater through the application of a unit tax on water quantities. The model assumes that the public agency (i.e., the water administration) aims at maximi
