Abstract
A system is described to simulate and visualise the trajectory and fate of oil spills. The system uses a GIS to store the geo-referenced information, such as bathimerry and mean conditions of wind, currents and waves. It includes also the physico-chemical properties of the most common crude oils. The computation of the weathering of the spill and its trajectory is performed by different modules that can be used operationally with forecasted met-ocean conditions. However it can also be used with the mean conditions resident in the system while forecast data is not available. 1 Introduction The response measures for an oil spill at sea can benefit from the ability to forecast the trajectory and fate of the spill on the short and medium term. For the adequate implementation of resp
