Abstract
This paper describes the development of a numerical model to determine the surface currents due to local winds. It is aimed at providing a useful guide for racing yachts as well as other engineering applications. The 3D model used is based on a semi implicit discretisation of the hydrodynamic equations and uses a mixing length and parabolic model for the turbulence closure. Typical results of the simulation are included which illustrate the affect that winds of varying speeds and directions will have on the tidal surface currents. 1 Introduction The Hauraki Gulf is the site for the America's Cup 2000 race series. The venue is exposed to a variety of wind strengths and directions and also experiences moderate tidal flows from a tidal range of 2-3 metres. There
