R. - Environmental Section, Politecnico di ABSTRACT The development and application to Milan urban area of empirical statistical models for describing the relationships between CO and NO* annual concentration averages and the corresponding air quality standard parameters are reported. The models developed are utilised in-line with simple roll- back equations for the assessment of the reduction in emission sources required to meet the air quality goals in the area. INTRODUCTION In Milan urban area, like in many other Italian large cities, CO and NO2 air quality standards are exceeded: in such situations, EEC Directives require control enforcement plans to assure compliance and maintenance of the regulations not respected.
