Neace Mercer University, Macon, Georgia, USA Email: neace mb(a)mer cer.edu Abstract Sustainable development is the fourth R, and like the other Rs (reading, writing, arithmetic) requires knowledge and application as a means for understanding the world about us, for communicating with others about issues of mutual interest and for self enhancement. To this end sustainable development should be elevated to the same level of general concern as the other three Rs if it is to become operational in daily living, be that scholar or a small farmer. Two models are presented for discussion using a holistic strategy for operationalizing sustainability as a part of everyday living. The first, an overview paradigm manifesting the multidisciplinary, multistakeholder character of sustainable development, proposes a transdisciplinary modus operandi for the scholarly/research community.
