Abstract
The development of a behavioural ecology approach to integrating decision- making, economic and ecological models, using an example of a development project in the mid-Zambezi valley in Africa is described. The objective of the approach is to provide a new research method which is compatible with those already familiar to ecologists, economists and social scientists and which is capable of describing complex interactions in anthropic-ecosystems to inform policy making. The approach allows for multi-factorial decision-making, based on information and subjective 'priority attitudes', as well as objective economic and ecological metrics, simulating 'quality of life'-based decisions in the context of'sustainability' in both an ecocentric and anthropocentric sense.
