Abstract

In order to understand the complex interplay between dynamical and physico- chemical processes in the planetary boundary layer, such as turbulent mixing of chemically reacting species and their interaction with cloud droplets and aerosol particles, a comprehensive modelling approach is called for. Progressive intro- duction of as many processes as possible is required, first at a rather low degree of sophistication, then with further refinements after sensitivity studies. We first present results obtained with such a mesoscale physico-chemical modelling sys- tem and outline strategies for further model development, e.g. introduction of spectral aerosol chemistry and parameterization of turbulent mixing of chemi- cally reacting species. Introduction The atmospheric bo
