Abstract
Damage functions are used to evaluate the damage on materials in given environmental conditions. A review of the damage functions described in the literature is provided. The damage function defines the relationship between deposition from the atmosphere and the deterioration of materials of artistic interest, particularly stones. The Lipfert damage function was tested in an Italian urban site, i. e. Ravenna, in order to evaluate the effects of wet and dry deposition in the damage processes occurring on stone surfaces of artistic monuments. The trend of the damage as a function of time was also evaluated. The preliminary results of this study indicate that the damage due to acid rain is generally limited, while dry deposition accounts for 10 to 20% of th
