Abstract
Urban and suburban transport emissions are directly related to the selection of the fuel, power unit type and design used on a vehicle. Thus, pollution engineering must embrace engine design, fuel design, owning and operating and in-service monitoring. However, pollution engineering must also embrace new and innovative sensor technologies, some of which may appear rather futuristic at this stage in their development. The myth, reality and future of a selection of sensor technologies which are either just at the ideas stage, the research stage or are presently commercially available are discussed. These include devices utilising non- dispersive infra-red detectors, flame ioni
