Abstract

Nowadays, controlling tourism growth has become a significant policy issue for the tourism sector. As population density and tourism demand increase in the coastal regions during the peak tourist period, more pressure is placed on coastal areas. The need to evaluate the impact of the tourist industry on the environment leads to developing a group of sustainable development indicators. Several studies propose indicators and models. The island of Mykonos is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Greece. In our research, we examined the negative and positive impacts of massive tourist development in high quantity and a cosmopolitan Greek destination. We analyse the current condition of the natural resources, such as coastal zones, ports and environmental infrastructure.
