Abstract
We present a numerical investigation of the impact of matrix diffusion on solute transport in a single fracture and in a three dimensional fracture network. The network consists of three orthogonal sets of four regularly spaced fractures. The transmissivity of the fractures is constant and flow occurs only in the fracture network. Solute transport is described by advection, dispersion and diffusion in the fractures and diffusion in the rock blocks. The fracture network and the blocks are treated as a single system and matrix diffusion is three dimensional. In order to insure mass conservation a mixed hybrid finite element formulation is u
