Abstract
We develop mixed finite element methods for multiphase groundwater flow in irregular, heterogeneous, multiblock aquifers. Each block (subdomain) is covered by a logically rectangular grid. The grids are constructed locally and do not have to match on the interfaces, allowing for accurate modeling of large scale geological features such as faults and layers. An expanded mixed method, designed to handle efficiently irregular geometry and de- generate diffusion, is employed for the subdomain discretization. Specially chosen mortar finite element spaces are introduced for the phase pressures and saturat
