Abstract
The water quality of the Lagoon of Venice (Italy) is affected by pollution problems, mainly due to the discharge of nutrients and toxicants from the watershed. The morphology of the Lagoon and the location of the pollution points of discharge generate strong gradients of pollutant concentrations as water quality degradation impairs the designated use of the Lagoon. This paper proposes a strategy to identify the acceptable pollution loads and the pollution abatement measures. The role of modelling in studying the distribution of a conservative tracer is analysed and an application is presented. The pollution sources in the watershed are considered and th
