Abstract

The aim of this study was to predict the impact of a remediation plan starting in 1999, consisting of several wastevvater treatment plants located along 45 km of the Mapocho river; in particular, to foresee the complying of irrigation water quality standards, which are not presently met. The simulation was performed using the QUAL2E-UNCAS model. The river was characterised hydraulically (backwater curves) and environmentally (BOD, DO, FC), together with discharges and withdrawals. Sampling campaigns were performed during a long period of low flows -which gave a proper worst case scenario- yielding variable but high pollutant concentrations (up to 2.0E7 MPN/100 ml FC, and 230 mg/1 BOD).
