Abstract
A two-dimensional steady-state mercury transport and fate model of the Gulf of Trieste has been developed recently to evaluate possible trends of mercury pollution. In this model, wind forcing was taken into account by application of a single "average" annual wind. Thereby, wind field above the gulf has lost its dynamic character which was then partly replaced by increased dispersion coefficient of the advection-dispersion model. The calibration issue described in this paper led to a better agreement between the measured and the computed results as the model efficiency increased from 40 percent before the improvement to more than 60 percent afterwards. Introduction The Gulf of Trieste is a semi-en
