Abstract
Rapid sand filtration is an essential process in purification of water. Then, in order to operate the rapid sand filter according to the time variation of the influent and effluent concentration, a simple and physically meaningful mathematical model, which contains one unknown parameter to be estimated adaptively during the operation, has been constructed. The filtrate quality was simulated using a dynamic parameter estimation method based on the quasi-linearization of the model equations. The comparison of the Eliassen's experimental values with their simulated ones shows that the prediction procedure combining with the model may be practical for the operation of rapid sand filters. 1 Introduction Sand filters for water purification may be identified as slow (1-10 mMay~*
