Abstract
A mathematical model for the management of large rivers subject to power plant heating is presented. The equations of mass, momentum and thermal energy transfer are integrated in time and space in a one-dimensional frame of reference. The model was tested and validated with field data of the Po river, where several power plants are located. The model was then used to evaluate the effects of standard power plant operations on the environment in terms of temperature increases with respect to an undisturbed state. 1. Introduction The increasing energy demand in industrialized countries forced in past years the construction of several power plants in the vicinity of large rivers. As the typical efficiency of conventional power plants is around 35-40 percent, lar
